Two For Lunch at Jalisco's by Lynn Cohen

I like the brevity of this one...it was my second twenty minute drawing there in a row on Thursday.
My friend Cris said I was unkind showing his double chin. Then I had to admit to her that he
didn't really have a double chin but I made the shirt collar before I finished his head so had to
add a chin to get his neck to fit right in his shirt. LOL Sorry guy! But artists have to do what they have to do sometimes.

The skies have been ever changing minute to minute here of late, this view out our backyard is where I can see it best. I think this is the second or third small painting I've done of the same view. All different skies.

I am mostly drawing people on my blog lately. You can catch up viewing them on my slide show on the side bar where I am putting everything I've drawn and/or painted in 2012 so far. Close to 50 pieces there.

This one is watercolor paint first, then black ink. 140 lb watercolor paper. 7" X 10" book.

I just had to do a quick sketch of this mercedes van that pulled into a car park. The green portion of it was wooden overlap boards and on the back the owners had their bicycles plus a motorbike! It got a lot of attention from passers-by.

Thought I would add this little sketch of fallen leaves. I quickly sketched them whilst waiting for husb. to collect me one day - yes, I used my Lamy Safari. When I got home I added the watercolour, and since the Lamy has watersoluable ink the colours merged when I added the paint. I quite liked that happening and felt it brought the sketch to life.

Dragon's Breath

Window View on Winter in CA

I decided to post this mostly because I wanted to leave comments for Seema and Ann and could not in the normal way.

Ann, I am curious about the pen you are using! What is different or special about it? Of course I want one as you are doing so well with it in this little scene you did (in the post below this one).

Seema, I love the color and joy in this painting of yours out the window and the happy plants on the sill.
(in the post below Ann's).

My little drawing was done sitting in my recliner looking up at a tall window in our living room that looked out on wintry bare trees and a gray sky on a winter morning this past week. Done in ink only.

If anyone has any suggestions of what more I can try to get my comment privileges back on this blog I'd be most appreciative.

Sunday night: I still cannot even see the comments left here; or on any other posts here. it is so frustrating. I went to blogger help but see nothing there that indicates they are working on or realize this is a problem.

Does This Count As Art?

I sure hope this doesn't break the rules here because I wanted to get the word out about The Butterfly Project and I thought here the artists might want to participate. It took me about 20 minutes to create this blog button for my sidebar on my blog. I used a bookmark I had made, photographed it and added all the other computer stuff I needed to make it a linking button. Here's the picture of my new button for the Project...

Let me explain The Butterfly Project. The Holocaust Museum in Houston is doing an amazing thing. They have set up a goal to collect 1.5 million handmade butterflies (in any form, painting, collage, sketch etc.) from around the world by December 31st, 2012. Each butterfly represents one of the 1.5 million children who perished in the Holocaust. In the Spring of 2014 an exhibit will be installed in the museum to serve as a memory of the children. If you want more information on how to participate, please go to this post on my blog, Just Add Water Silly.

If you'd like to display this button on your blog just go to my blog and you'll find the code on the right sidebar. Just copy and paste the html code into an html widget when in your design section. I think this Project is such a beautiful idea. The museum has collected 900,000 butterflies so far, so they need many more. Please add the button to your blog and think of sending your own contribution butterfly. It's for a beautiful cause.

I am no cook, but I enjoyed drawing and then painting this little plate of food!

the black squares around the plate are black ink on top of the blue paint.

Why does it always take far less time to eat a meal than it does to prepare it?

Or paint it for that matter?

BLOGGER ISSUES

I have heard that a few of you cannot post a comment so I tried and was successful. I am using Safari on my Mac and iPad. So I don't know if it is a Microsoft/Blogger issue.

I read that Blogger has been doing some updates so am not sure that's where the problem originates.

I would suggest that you contact Blogger about your problem to see if they can fix it. I went to the Blogger help forum and could not find anyone reporting a similar problem.

Little Red Bird - Ann Hyde

This little red bird did not take long to paint, certainly it was within 20 minutes. I loaded my brush with paint and drew it in one go. Whilst the paint was still wet I added the darks, and the branch he is sitting on. When it had dried I popped in the beak and eye. I wish they were native here... oh for a splash of colour like this in the trees!

Just A Quick Cuppa...

Actually, that's what I'm gonna do right after I type this and add my "Twenty Minute Sketch". Last night I was doodling around, craving a cup of hazelnut coffee with heaping spoonfuls of coffee whitener and Splenda added. I was cold from the new snow that was currently dusting Nanaimo and just wanted to climb in a big cup and swim around in that hot, yummy, fragrant liquid. This is the result of my craving. :o)

Blowing Bubbles

I did this one in two sections, both in 20 minutes. It also is for a challenge to draw "Bubble Gum". When I was a little girl I used to go roller skating in the summer. I had pristinely white boot quads with pink pom-poms that I attached to the toe of the boot. I'd go to an empty parking lot and skate until I was so tired I could hardly skate home! On those wonderful days of summer I have memories of a mouthful of pink bubble gum. It was great! (click to enlarge)

On our recent trip we stayed in the Royal Bath Hotel in Bournemouth. As per my usual habit I sketched part of the room we stayed in. I only got as far as pencil and ink outline before the 20 minutes were up - it had been a tiring day out and my eye to pen coordination was very slow so late in the day......

the following day my brain was working quicker and I got a whole sketch and paint on the paper within 20 minutes....

I had some serious fun with this challenge, I combined the Twenty Minute Challenge and another one to illuminate the word "Grounded". I, ehem... killed two birds with one stone, so to speak. ;o) No hitting me for the pun! I absolutely LOVE how it turned out!! I happen to think seagulls are totally cool birds and we have many of them around here, in British Columbia, Canada.

This is a sketch I made on a relatively lesser crowded evening at Daddy's Deli/Waikiki, a local Mediterranean deli/wine bistro, and added few colors at home. The place offers some great bright-lit views, and has a generous collection of plants.

Jalisco Chips by Lynn Cohen

Another lunch at Jalisco's today. The place was packed with people, but I started off by drawing my

basket of chips. I kept eating them at the same time

reminding myself to leave enough to draw!

The table has a red cloth over laid with a clear plastic covering

allowing for reflections of the bowl to be seen.

I had a few more minutes so I drew this fellow several tables away picking his teeth, and wearing a dark blue watch cap.

When I got home this evening I added color using my red Tom Bow pen and yellow, amber, and blue watercolors. Drawing was done using a ZIG 08 black ink pen.

I'm gearing up for Valentine's Day in my Etsy shop, so I made up some bookmarks on the "Love" theme. They were all so fun to create, but this one is probably my favorite. For a tongue-in-cheek lark I photographed the bookmark on my copy of book "The Proposing Tree". This little bookmark was fast and easy to do, but turned out fantastically. I'm happy.

Wedding Themed Bookmark

I needed another bookmark because the laminating sheets I'm using with them takes two bookmarks per. I wouldn't want to waste half, heaven forbid, hehehe. So... I whipped this one up. I really like the effect of the golden rings. I'm thinking of putting it up on Etsy under the heading "Did he Propose over Christmas?". Anyway. It was fun to get back to creating. I'm sure you know, just click on the image to enlarge it to see the detail.

Lunch at Pure Grain Bakery by Lynn Cohen

I am starting the new year off by attempting to draw/paint as much as possible. I am not setting any specific goal of how much or how often; just committed to create as often as possible.

Today I had an extra hour and a half

between clients so I took a walk outdoors on this particularly lovely sunny day

winding up at the Pure Grain Bakery for a latte and lunch. I sat down to eat and looked around to see who might be a good subject and chose this gentleman who sat directly in front of me. He was on his phone and on his computer so I felt he would not notice me drawing him and of course he did not, even though he was a mere table length away from me. I am getting braver and braver!!!

It gave me plenty of relaxed time in the 20 minute time frame to draw him in detail along with some of his surroundings.

I brought the picture home with me and after dinner I sat and painted it again using my new luminescent paints (are you getting that I really like them?) with a medium sized brush (round #8) and a tiny no number brush from a set I just bought on vacation. This is on 140 lb watercolor paper.
The drawing was done using an XS Pitt Artist's Pen. Black.

Asian Woman Eating Mexican Food at Jalisco's Lynn Cohen

I went in late for lunch today, after processing a stack of mail and phone calls to clients after being gone two weeks from my office.

My blood sugar was so low I was practically shaking and wasn't at all sure I would be able to draw before I ate something. Luckily the chips are served immediately.

I drew this lovely young woman at her table right in front of me, but I don't think she caught on.

I did not draw her male companion though as I felt he might be able to see me drawing.

I came home and added luminescent and regular watercolor paint to the black Pitt Artist's Ink.
I had a fun conversation with the owners son who is an educated artist and animator. He was nicely complimentary. A fun meeting of artists minds!

Thank You & Feeling Cards

I've made up a couple sample cards, thinking I just might see how much it would cost to print them up in batches of half a dozen for sale in my Etsy shop. I know there's Zazzle and Moo Cards, does anyone out there in blogger land know other inexpensive but good quality places to get printing done? Hmmm.

Anyways, these were drawn months ago but I took the challenge three times as I painted & colored them. So, I guess that means I took the challenge a total of 6 times with these cards. Cool. lol. Geez, the fact that this makes me happy says something about my geekdom. (Just click on the picture to see them enlarged.)

A Little Bookmark...

This was such fun to create, I love how fluffy the bubbles look. I should probably take a little time and add some color. Hmmm, I wonder what color one paints a bar of soap. I should seriously apologize for the appalling photography, I took the picture at midnight in the dark, lol. The paper is actually white.

I'm going to be laminating all the bookmarks I've created using scrap watercolor paper and offer them up for sale in my Etsy store. Getting that done is one of my first resolutions, lol. I can't wait to laminate everything I can get my hot little hands on. If I had a laminator AND a label maker at the same moment?? I think there would be just too much happiness to be contained in one body! Hehehe.

Mendocino Beach Scene Drawing Comes To Color Later Lynn Cohen

I drew this while eating breakfast

at the Bay View Cafe in Mendocino yesterday. I didn't think much of it after it was finished and the oatmeal arrived.

Then we came home and I painted it using old watercolors and some new luminescent ones I bought while on this trip, painting from memory and ad libbing a bit. The paint made it pop! I wasn't at all sure I could make the ocean look right or the waves, but when I look at it now it's just what I was looking at (well, almost) and I like it.

I did this with a .07 mechanical pencil in my sketchbook, while riding the subway. I think the vertical lines are really important to establish the setting and encourage a pattern.

A Tail To Remember

Hi, I'm Jenn. I'm new to posting here. I've had the badge for this site on my blog for ages and ages but never seemed to find the time to get back and DO a challenge. Well, finally I did one. In our park, across from where I live, we have a very small, tiny really, petting zoo for the children. In that zoo there are several peacocks. They're allowed to go wherever they please and sometimes one drives by and sees them 5 minutes or more from home, walking around, exploring the other part of the park.

The other day I could hear them calling to one another from over my fence. I decided I'd try and create an impressionistic drawing of their tail. I used Sakura Pigma pens to make the drawing. It's bookmark size. When I cut down the watercolor paper I use to paint on, I always have these oddly sized pieces of paper. So, I cut them down and when I have 20 minutes or so, I decorate them whimsically. I plan to sell them in my Etsy store after Christmas. Hopefully people will want hand drawn bookmarks! :o)

For the past few months I have been submerged under work, and somehow not been able to paint as much as I'd like to. So taking inspiration from Lynn's Jalisco sketches (which are so much fun to watch) I tried some brief sketches/doodles while I had breakfast at Breadworks, and at my neighborhood plant shop (which I hope to paint in greater detail sometime soon!). I came home and added watercolor to the sketches; some the ink ran making the colors a little dirty.

Next lunch at Jalisco's...finally got both people of this couple. Last week could only see him from where I was sitting. Done in 20 minutes with black Pitt pen size S. I learned that my perspective of the other tables was way "off". And I shouldn't try to get EVERYTHING in in such a short amount of time. Also his arm facing me is drawn seeing it in two different positions rolled into one. My little inside joke with myself.

I drew this guy at a cafe in about 10 minutes then, as usual, I painted it at home in another 10. I'm very happy with the run of green right through to his shoe! I use a lot of water and a lot of watercolour paint and leave the medium to do it's thing.

I often see this gentleman with his wife there at noontime; she was there this day as well, but was obsured from my line of vision by other patrons.

I used a brown ink pen for this drawing and did not spend more than 20 minutes on it if that.

My Twenty Minute Background

I used a painters drop-cloth canvas
as my banner material
This is going to be used for a
Spiritual Retreat Banner

before I started my 20 min challenge to paint it
I did iron it and neatened up the edges with hot glue

I used a big ice-cream container
as my paint palette.
first the white then pink then purple and then green.
I wanted to just
let it happen and flow...
like the sea and sky melting into one another.

Is it sunrise or sunset?

This basic idea was inspired by a poster,
a friend showed me,
that said,
"Let Go and Let God"
...But I did it in my own style.

This has been a good 20 min. exercise
in just letting go of perfection
after all
the world is far from perfect.
Nature can be very random and spontaneous !
Just how it should be !

Peanut Butter [Christmas] Cookie - Melissa Talma

These bizarrely popular cookies (peanut butter blossoms) started off my holiday baking this year. Anyone know why they've become a holiday staple? I prefer the creativity and variety of the unique cookies that will end up on the same plate with this one, but really they are all good. I plan to paint the results of my other holiday baking in 20 minutes as well! Watercolor, approx. 4" x 4 1/2".

just found 20 minutes to sketch this plant whilst watching TV - (the plant was NEXT to the TV not ON it, just in case there was any confusion!) I know it took 20 minutes because that was the length of time left on the programme I was watching - it was just nice to sit and doodle a sketch without the pressure of HAVING to get it done perfectly - turned out okay I think.

My plein air buddy and I went to the cemetery yesterday and painted quickly as the winds were blowing ferociously...as I hope you can tell by the direction of the leaves in the tree. You cannot see paper flapping or hair flying, but they were. This was more than the normal challenge to do.

I did not have time to do the tree complete justice and may add more to it's upper limbs, as it had such character of peeling bark and variation of color. I was sitting a bit down hill looking up at the tree so it's juxtaposition in relation to the tomb stones looks off but really it is how it was to my eye.

Drawn in pencil quickly, watercolor then grey and black ink pens.

Monastery Inspiration - Kathy

He joined a Benedictine Monastery 10 yrs ago or so. He is very inspirational for me...

Since I was on a field visit and had my paints with me, limited time as we had just stopped for a quick lunch so I decided to do a 20 min sketch! Out of the Mist - Ann Hyde

My initial instinct is always to show the world the 'perfect painting', the one I am most happy with - I expect most of us are like that. For a change I have posted this Sketch - Oh, don't get me wrong I am happy with it, but it really is a quick Sketch, literally it shows how I felt at the time - I knew I couldn't make the horse actually move so I put the washes of colour around it in bold strokes to get that feeling of movement - that mystery and indication of a horse in the mist.

I literally went for a BASIC inference of a horse and PLAYED with paint to give it a FEELING of how I felt at the time....does that make sense!? My sketches, I know, will always be SKETCHES and never Fine Art but I was only after a Sketch, a play with paint, a moment where my brush touches the paper and out comes an indication of a horse.

Thanks for listening - I would love to know if anyone else gets moments of Wild Abandonment with their art. Do you ever let others see your work? How about sharing some with us.....

Jalisco Diners The Day Before Thanksgiving by Lynn Cohen

I'm happy to report that I finally broke through my reluctance to draw people close by, in this case eating lunch at Jalisco's. This young couple was two tables away from me, but were so absorbed in each other they didn't have a clue that I was drawing them. The large clock over their heads (not in the picture) helped me stay on task to the 20 minute challenge! I did this quickly in ink only. I am always surprised what I can capture in this length of time. Can you find a couple of "mistakes" in the picture?

How does Cadmium Red flow - Ann Hyde

Another quick watercolour study in my sketchbook. This time playing with Cadmium Red to see how it flows and adding extra clear water for the lights. I waited for it to dry (approx 5 minutes) and then added the shading. Having done this I remembered I had seen some Apple Studies somewhere before and realised that

I had planned to paint this still life set up a bit larger, but ran out of paper! Well, just the perfect moment for a quick twenty minute sketch/painting was in order. Berries - Ann Hyde

A very loose watercolour of some berries. I just kept dropping the various (prepared colours) wet into wet - by the time I got to the bottom some of the berries had dried enough to go over again and all in the 20 minutes. I did see some hard edges afterwards, but that was after the 20 minutes anyway...ho hum! This came from a photograph I took recently, which I've added and perhaps it will give somebody else inspiration - please feel free to use it.

I sketched this in a few minutes with a waterproof pen while at a cafe. I took some colour notes then, once at home, I added watercolour. My goal was to capture a fleeting moment in a busy cafe.

I outlined this little bird and then used the paints wet in wet. You know me, I like doing that! As soon as the paint dried enough I added darker paint for the eye and beak.

Over Stuffed Office Chair Lynn Cohen

This is the chair where clients sit. I sit across from it. Been looking at it for the past 21 years now.
Old fabric now covered with make shift thrifted fabrics almost matches; hides worn spots. White crocheted throw on back of chair is even older...circa 1972. Lots of history here. Sun splashed across two pillows more thrift store finds.

Watercolour - An easy 20 minute challenge ideal for the wet into wet style.

As the paint dried I added a stronger mix to the foreground and then scrapped out

the shape of the waves (with an old lolly stick!)

I am noticing a trend on our challenge Blog that I think is getting away from the purpose of doing these.

The purpose is to restrict our art time to 20 minutes to help us get the essentials of the subject without obsessing about details and thus improving our art.

While I know most everyone would like to sell their art this is not the venue for that.

Please keep your challenges to art only.

I painted this watercolour during a Life Drawing Session at the local art school here in Toronto. The session is made up of short poses, from 1 minute to 20 minutes. I love it because you learn to draw fast which means being selective with the pencil lines you put down. Also, I brought my watercolours to practice skin tones and values.

my old rusted watering can sitting on the outdoors shelf with a few other old friends. It called me

to draw it and had just enough time left over to splash on a bit of color.

This is Karen from Art in the Garage. I painted a woman because that generally seems to be my subject of choice. I think 'my girls' are me in all my different pieces of life--that they are all of us--

I love working quickly like this! No pressure for perfection! The hairdryer I keep at my work table helped, and I made sure I had a couple of minutes at the end to go back in with colored pencil and charcoal (gotta have charcoal!)

This view is taken from a recent walk. It measures approx. 9" x 10". I had the colours all prepared and did this wet into wet. The first, under colour, took 10 minutes to dry and I then added the darker shades. I didn't go for detail in this and just left it very loose and impressionistic!

Another

lunch at Jalisco's. This time I chose to draw the guy(s) eating at "my usual table" 2 tables away.

I started with the guy whose back was to me. Then the table and stuff on it, then the background curtains and window; but all I could do of that "other guy" was his leg and shoe below the table.

I felt weird drawing him as I was sure he'd know I was doing it...so I became

intimidated!

We'll call him the Ghost!

but I wanted to practice drawing menorahs for Chanukah. It's the nine candle holder for this holiday that comes according to the Jewish calendar this year starting on Dec. 20th at sunset and lasts for eight days. A new candle lit each day using the candle from the tall middle holder until all nine are glowing brightly. This may very well become my "Chanukah card" I send to friends and family. Or it could be another as I am not yet done drawing menorahs.

I used a black ink pen (no pencil first so no erasers) and then the colorless Tom Bow pen/brush to blend the back ink into gray for the pewter candelabra.

Inked Daisy - Teri C

I bought a Noodler's flex tip fountain pen and wanted to do an ink sketch. It was perfect to get a twenty-minute sketch in. I did it on pre-watercolor wash page in my daily journal.

I like the Noodler's pen but it is a fussy starter, that is, it takes a bit of scribbling with it to get the ink running.

The humble white onion has many layers of complexity (besides those under the outer papery skin) that you discover while trying to render it correctly in 20 minutes. I love the colors here as well as the challenge to get the line details right. Watercolor, 5 1/2" x 8".

As my journey with watercolor continues I have been practicing with a book called "Need to Know Watercolor" from Collins. It's very easy to follow and has clear, concise instructions on how to start working with watercolors. The contributing artists are Alwyn Crawshaw, June Crawshaw and Trevor Waugh. My trees are a bit wonky still so I sent some of my first efforts painting skies.

I finally bought some actual watercolor paper at Michaels, up until now I have been using my sketchbook and the pages can get rather wrinkly :)

I hope you enjoy my 20 minute watercolor skies.

Thumper

When my children were small we had a pet rabbit that came to us when its mother pushed him from the nest.

Tame rabbits will abandon there babies if they feel they have too many.

Our Thumper lived 8 years and died quietly in his sleep one winter morning.

I painted this bunny in Windsor and Newton watercolors on 140 lb cold pressed paper.

It took more of my twenty minutes to do the one eye than the whole bunny.

This was a joy to paint, he was a proud and faithful friend.
